Tenants strongly favor telecom choice without government regulations

According to the Real Estate Alliance, today’s tenants of privately owned buildings want more telecommunications choices, but without government interference. The Alliance, an organization of 11 trade associations including the Institute of Real Estate Management, opposes continued lobbying by the telecommunications industry for government-forced access to private buildings.

In response to a recent announcement made by the Association for Local Telecommunications Services (ALTS) regarding “smart buildings,” Alliance spokesman Roger Platt applauded ALTS’ efforts to bring new telecommunications choices to tenants through its Smart Building Coalition. However, he criticized the highly successful telecom companies that want a legal advantage over other providers negotiating in the free market for access to privately owned buildings. He added, “The sheer numbers of contracts being signed every day between property owners and telecom providers to deliver the technologies tenants want shows that the market is working and that new, burdensome regulations are completely unwarranted.”
