Tennessee college reports big drop in campus crime using Milestone IP video surveillance

May 23, 2005—Southwest Tennessee Community College security personnel say they have greatly improved their control over security matters by using an IP video surveillance system based on XProtect software from Milestone Systems, installed by Dynamark Security in the summer of 2004. They report a drastic drop in crime and other security incidents on campus.

The school currently has a total of 14,000 students in seven campuses throughout Memphis, including more than 3,500 foreign students. With its metropolitan location, the college has been challenged with destruction of property through vandalism and gang graffiti, false fire alarms, disorderly conduct, theft from the buildings and auto theft, stolen books and computers, and community vagrants.

Dynamark Security designed and installed a video surveillance system utilizing Milestone XProtect IP video surveillance software that manages 105 cameras, including SONY Pan/Tilt/Zoom and Panasonic models. An additional 87 cameras will be added at another location, and new campus sites are planned for further expansion.

The campus police force reports greatly improved oversight and control of campus activity with the new surveillance system. It can be remotely accessed via the Web at night or on weekends, with clear images and evidence to resolve any situations that arise. The results are: drastically reduced crime; improved safety for faculty, staff, students, and property; more efficient use of police resources and the educational budget; faster response to incidents; and better monitoring of occupational health and safety issues.
