Texas Public Utility Commission says customer interest in electric choice growing

January 18, 2002—In the first two weeks of electric competition in Texas, the state’s Public Utility Commission (PUC) has seen three times the average number of Web site hits and nine times the average number of telephone inquiries. According to PUC Chairman Max Yzaguirre, “The incredible response is a strong sign that customers are interested in learning about electric choice and how they can benefit from competition for electric service.”

PUC is encouraging customers to learn as much as they can about the competitive energy market through a public education campaign, Texas Electric Choice. Between Dec. 30 and Jan. 5, the campaign’s Web site saw 30,898 hits—a three hundred percent increase over the weekly average. The campaign’s Answer Center logged 17,550 calls—a nine hundred percent jump over the weekly average.

Throughout January, PUC will upgrade the site, providing more educational information, an updated list of Retail Electric Providers (REPs), and a search of REP offers by zip code. Customers are encouraged to visit the site on a regular basis.
