October 22, 2001—The British Institute of Facilities Management (BIFM) announced the winners of its 2001 Awards recently at the London Hilton.
This years awards built on the established BIFM Office of the Year Award with a number of new categories. BIFM Awards chairman, David Hogg said: “We have made a significant shift in defining these award categories to reflect the importance of the facilities manager in todays global business world.”
They Think Its All Over star, Rory McGrath, presented the awards in front of 650 facilities management professionals gathered at the event following FM Expo.
Swiss Re-insurance scooped the BIFM Environmental Impact Award. The two other finalists were United Utilities and The Planning Inspectorate at Temple Quay House.
Severn Trent Water and Aqumen Defence were joint winners of the BIFM Award for Customer Service Initiative of the Year. Finalists were UCB Homeloans, Siemens Facilities Services at National Savings and Service Works with Lloyds TSB.
Anne Hart of Johnson Controls was awarded BIFM Facilities Manager of the Year Award and Trevor Payne of Oxford Radcliffe NHS Trust and Mike Freeland, Facilities Manager for Amec at Tate Britain were short-listed.
The BIFM Innovation Award went to Stanburys and Defence Science and Technology Laboratory with three runners-up: Arlington, Tower 42 and White Young Green, Currie & Brown and Shepherd and Wedderburn.
Facility Portal, from Facility Consultants won the BIFM New Technology Award. i-FM was shortlisted together with Click to Train from Johnson Controls.
BIFM Best Practice Award for FM in Minor Buildings was awarded to Ogilvy Touchdown and finalist was Cityspace Retec. The BIFM Award for PFI/PPP Project of the Year went to Carillion Services at Darent Valley Hospital.
Arthur Andersen in Birmingham won the BIFM Award for Business Evolution by Property Redevelopment while Capital One in Nottingham and Enterprise Oil in Aberdeen were shortlisted.
BIFM New Build Award went to Toyota for its new headquarters in Epsom with finalist being Stanhope at Chiswick Park.
Marilyn Wilder at Thames Water won the BIFM Award for Outstanding Student of the Year and independent consultant Rob Fernandez was awarded the BIFM Award for Training Programme Presenter of the Year.
The BIFM Press Prize went to The Facilities Business, which beat runner-up PFM magazine.
Commenting, David Hogg said: “The modern business world is a place where the value of the individual is recognised and the benefit of retaining key staff must surely be a primary consideration in any corporate policy. The Facilities Manager now plays a crucial part in all strategic planning issues, and BIFM will continue to offer the help and support that our individual members need to expand their careers.”
