Top 10 retail green energy users listed by EPA

March 2, 2007—The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has released its quarterly list, finalized January 8, 2007, of its Top 10 Retail Partners. These partners represent the largest completed annual green power purchases of all retail partners within the Green Power Partnership.

The combined green power purchases of these organizations amounts to an estimated 1.2 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) annually, which is an equivalent amount of electricity required to power nearly 100,000 homes each year, according to EPA.

EPA’s Top 10 Retail Partners are (with amount [kWh] and percent of green power usage):

  1. Whole Foods Market (463,128,000; 100%)
  2. Starbucks (185,000,000;20%)
  3. Staples (121,404,000; 20%)
  4. Safeway Inc. (87,000,000; 2%)
  5. Kohl’s Department Stores (80,152,000; 8%)
  6. Office Depot (76,000,000; 12%)
  7. FedEx Kinko’s (69,503,303; 26%)
  8. REI (63,080,000; 100%)
  9. Coldwater Creek Inc (60,000,000; 100%)
  10. prAna (29,678,000; 100%).
