June 19, 2002—At the recent WINDPOWER 2002 conference in Oregon, David Garman, assistant secretary for the US Department of Energy’s (DOE) Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy program, outlined a five-year extension of the wind energy production tax credit and the reauthorization of the Renewable Energy Production Incentive.
DOE is working on a number of efforts to develop wind power, he said, including:
- Research and development of lower speed wind turbines that are suitable of entire nation;
- Addressing many of the regulatory issues at the federal level that might hinder deployment of wind power;
- Educating state energy officials and local developers about the benefits of wind energy; and
- Increasing the federal government’s purchases of wind-generated electricity to hasten the development of the market.
