Twenty organizations meet EPA’s building challenge for 2006

December 4, 2006—From schools to grocery stores to hotels to offices, 20 new organizations across the country are being recognized for rising to the challenge to reduce the energy they use, save money, and help the environment. As part of the Energy Star Building Challenge for energy efficiency, these organizations are EPA’s 2006 Energy Star Leaders.

Energy Star Leaders manage more than 212 million square feet of building space—more than the combined office space of Boston, San Francisco, and Washington, DC, says EPA. These leaders achieve significant energy savings with simple steps, such as turning off lights and computers while not in use, setting temperatures that balance comfort and efficiency, and upgrading to more efficient lighting.

The 2006 Energy Star Leaders are: Accor North America (TX); Averill Park Central School District (NY); Buffalo-Hanover-Montrose School ISD 877 (MN); Burnsville Eagan Savage School District 191 (MN); Cohoes City School District (NY); Columbia Heights School District (MN); Davenport Community School District (IA); Falcon School District 49 (CO); Hannaford Bros. Co. (ME); Ichabod Crane Central School District (NY); Mahtomedi School District (MN); Muskogee Public Schools (OK); Price Chopper (NY); Seaford School District (DE); St. Cloud Area School District 742 (MN); St. Louis Park School District (MN); Stillwater Area Schools (MN); Sweetbay Supermarkets (FL); The Durst Organization, Inc. (NY); and The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company, Inc. (NJ).

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) provides easy-to-use tools to help building owners and managers reduce energy use. EPA’s Energy Star Challenge encourages building owners and managers to reduce energy use by 10 percent or more. For more information about Energy Star Leaders, visit EPA.
