Two online projects map Western renewables; PA wind energy

July 17, 2002—A detailed, online wind energy map of Pennsylvania—created by Conservation Consultants Inc. with support from the US Department of Energy and the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection—was recently unveiled. PA Wind Map offers visitors the opportunity to design a unique, printable wind map, and allows everyone to add or delete roadways, towns, county lines, and other features to suit their interests or needs. It touts itself as the “complete guide to wind energy resources of Pennsylvania.”

Also, a Web site called the Renewable Energy Atlas of the West—produced by the Land & Water Fund of the Rockies and Northwest Sustainable Energy for Economic Development—is being released this summer. It will detail the wind, solar, biomass, and geothermal resources in eleven Western states. Existing facilities and policy overlays will also be included to show areas where incentives and other standards have been effective in driving renewable development, and highlighting areas with strong resources but limited development. The atlas will also identify areas of transmission congestion and develop updated power potential estimates for the various resources.
