November 12, 2001—Tyco Electronics has created a new initiative to provide turnkey implementation of wireless communications links for business, educational, health care and governmental customers. The new wireless services offering, Amp NetConnect Wireless Solutions, will enable customers that need high-speed, short-range communications links to successfully implement wireless connectivity between or within offices. These new wireless communications solutions represent a strategic alternative to underground or overhead cabling or costly leased lines with recurring monthly fees.
Amp NetConnect Wireless Solutions offers both in-building and wide-area wireless solutions. In-building solutions may be entirely wireless, or wireless extensions to existing cabled local area networks (LANs). An example of the latter would be a building in which most of the offices and cubicles are served by a wired LAN, but where some areas—such as conference rooms or warehouse space—may benefit from wireless connectivity to the rest of the network. In this example, wireless access points provide the cable-free links between mobile users and the fixed network.
In the absence of the wireless option, organizations seeking to link two of their buildings must either run cabling (overhead, or underground) between them or lease a high-speed line from the local telephone carrier. The leased-line approach entails high and ongoing monthly lease rates, with typically long lead times for service installation and activation. Organizations that run their own cable between sites face a high up-front investment for trenching and cable installation. In addition to this, if two or more facilities are not on the same property, the owner faces the additional burden and complication of negotiating rights-of-way. A wireless solution gives all the advantages of customer-owned infrastructure (no need to lease lines from a carrier) without the high initial cost and legal complexities of running cable between buildings.
Wireless communications solutions can operate in Federal Communications Commission (FCC)-licensed frequency bands, or bands that permit unlicensed operation. For more information contact Amp NetConnect Wireless Solutions.
