U.S. Departments of Transportation, Labor and Interior buy green electricity from Pepco Energy Services

October 31, 2003—Pepco Energy Services, a provider of renewable electricity initiatives in the mid-Atlantic region, has signed agreements to supply electricity generated from renewable sources to the U.S. Departments of Interior, Labor and Transportation. Under an existing contract with the General Services Administration, Pepco Energy Services will supply over 10 million kilowatt-hours of Green-E certified power to the three federal departments through May 2004. Twenty-five percent of the green energy supplied under these contracts comes from regional wind generators and 75 percent from landfill gas electric generators.

A 1999 Executive Order encourages federal facilities to utilize renewable energy to satisfy 2.5 percent of their total electricity requirements by 2005. It also states that federal agencies shall consider the greenhouse effects of the source of electricity and strive to minimize the greenhouse gas intensity of purchased electricity. By supplying federal facilities such as the U.S. Department of Agriculture, U.S. Department of Energy, and U.S. General Services Administration, with renewable energy, Pepco Energy Services assists these agencies with obtaining this 2.5% renewable electricity requirement.

Pepco Energy Services will supply nearly 7.2 million kilowatt-hours of Green-E certified electricity to Department of Transportation, 2.5 million kilowatt-hours of Green-E certified renewable energy to the Department of Labor, and approximately 470,000 kilowatt-hours of Green-E certified power to the Department of Interior. Pepco Energy Services’ agreement with the Department of Transportation covers the 11 months beginning in June 2003, and its agreements with the Departments of Interior and Labor are for eight months beginning in September 2003.
