August 27, 2007—The International Union of Architects (lUnion Internationale des Architectes [UIA]) recently announced the theme of the 2007 World Day of Architecture, which will be celebrated on October 1 along with the United Nations World Habitat Day.
In choosing the theme “Transmitting Zero Co2 Emission Architecture,” UIA aims to demonstrate architects’ ability to drastically reduce carbon dioxide emissions through ecological design, construction, and maintenance of buildings and cities.
According to UIA, at least 50% of greenhouse gas emissions come from the construction and transportation sectors. UIA says that it is crucial for the world’s architects to mobilize to remedy this and to pass on to future generations “a built inheritance and urban environments that do not irremediably compromise our planet’s future and its climate.”
Through this year’s WDA celebration, the UIA hopes to highlight architects’ understanding and mindfulness of the current ecological emergency and invites all its Member Sections to set up an agenda around this theme for October 1.
