UKs HVCA calls for higher standards in wake of legionella case

April 15, 2005—With the Barrow-in-Furness legionella court case still underway and the prospect of new legislation on corporate manslaughter, there is renewed focus on health and safety standards, especially those of installers and maintenance contractors.

The Heating and Ventilating Contractors Association has called on all operators of public facilities to raise these standards. In order to help, the HVCA advocates the use of its Standard Maintenance Specification for Mechanical Services in Buildings, available on CD-ROM.

This provides best practice operational standards relating to all principal heating, cooling and ventilation systems commonly used in Europe, the Association says.

Searchable across 66 service equipment headings, the specification covers all aspects of air handling and heat generation, and features a comprehensive section on the safe running of plant, providing information on every aspect of health and safety. When met, the criteria detailed in the program ensures safe, energy efficient plant operation and compliance with all current legislation, notes the HVCA.
