UK buildings honored for cleaning-friendly design

July 31, 2005—The winners have been announced in the UK’s 2004 Building Cleanability Awards program, promoted by the cleaning industry Livery Company–The Worshipful Company of Environmental Cleaners. The awards are intended to draw attention to the increasingly important relationship between effective cleaning and good building design–its “cleanability.”

Organizers assert that since the ambience of a building is greatly affected by the level of cleanliness maintained, and easier cleaning and maintenance can reduce building operational costs, buildings should be designed and constructed with these issues in mind.

The 2004 award winners are: Gold Award—The White Rose Shopping Centre, Leeds; Silver Award—Castlegate House, Dudley; Bronze Award—Granite House, Leicester; Special Award for New Build Project—Drake Electronics, Cambridge; and Special Award for Refurbishment Project–Daimler Chrysler UK, Milton Keynes.

Category Winners are:

  • Commercial—Citypoint, London;
  • Education—London Business School;
  • Health—Remel House, Dartford;
  • Heritage—HM Treasury, London;
  • Leisure—Lighthouse Centre for the Arts, Poole; Public Buildings—The International Convention Centre, Birmingham; Retail—Princes Quay Shopping Centre, Hull; and Transport—Edinburgh Airport.

The Building Cleanability Awards are run in association with The British Cleaning Council, with further sponsorship provided by The British Institute of Cleaning Science, The Cleaning and Support Services Association, Greenham, a trading division of Bunzl Outsourcing and Karcher UK. The 2004 Awards were also supported for the first time by The British Institute of Facilities Management and The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.
