January 2, 2004—UK companies storing fuel on their sites are being urged to be vigilant by the Environment Agency, following the second pollution incident in a week suspected to have been caused by the theft of fuel. A film of oil found on the surface of Foss Beck was traced to a site that had recently had a fuel theft. It is believed that following the theft the storage tank leaked and flowed into the beck.
The Environment Agency is warning companies in the area to ensure their fuel storage facilities are secure and to check them for any signs of tampering, reminding them of their duty to comply with environmental regulations and ensure the sites they operate are not a source of pollution.
