August 12, 2002—The UKs Building Research Establishment (BRE) and the Institute of Energy will hold a major conference on October 29 to discuss the implications of the EUs Energy Performance of Buildings directive for the UK construction industry.
The key provisions of the Directive, which is set to become a legal requirement in the UK within three years, are minimum requirements for the energy performance of all new, as well as existing, buildings; energy certification of all buildings (with frequently visited buildings providing public services being required to display the certificate) and regular mandatory inspection of boilers and air conditioning systems in buildings.
With buildings accounting for nearly half of all CO2 emissions in the UK the directive provides a significant and realistic opportunity to achieve a substantial reduction in energy usage within buildings.
Louise Kingham, secretary and chief executive of the Institute of Energy said: “The directive provides opportunities to improve energy efficiency in existing and new buildings and the conference will be of particular relevance to anyone involved in the procurement, design, construction or management of buildings.”
