November 21, 2001—Five energy trade unions have threatened that workers at British Energy will strike over the next fortnight, potentially affecting around a quarter of the UK’s electricity production.
The trade unions argue that the British Energy board has repeatedly failed to listen to the workers complaints about pay. If no agreement is reached, workers will strike for two days. A Prospect (trade union for professional engineers) spokesperson announced the first action, to be held on Monday 19 November, would be a work to rule coupled with an overtime ban. This will probably result in all the companys eight nuclear generators being forced to close down. Notice of a 24 hour all-out strike on November 29 has also been issued to the company.
