UK FM market worth 117bn, says survey—Updated 13 September 2002

July 10, 2002—The third edition of the UK Facilities Management Market Audit report, published by the Workplacelaw Network in association with Masons solicitors, shows that the UK facilities management market has grown from being worth 47bn in 1996 to 117bn in 2002. According to the Workplacelaw Network, the figures in this survey represent both in-house and outsourced FM activity.

Based on interviews with 14 FM service providers and 229 facilities managers during the spring 2002, the research also found that several major FM providers have re-branded during the last two years despite brand recognition in the industry being low. Facilities managers are also expecting the market place to grow at 10% per year.

While several major FM service providers have re-branded during the last two years, brand recognition in the industry is still low, suggesting that there remain significant opportunities for business development.

Author Bev Burgess commented: “The key drivers in the market today remain the search for greater efficiencies and core business focus that lead to increased outsourcing, plus an increasing demand for flexibility. The latter is coming from both organizations and their employees, and is enabled by internet, wireless and broadband technology, such that the nature of FM is changing from a workplace to a people focused activity.”
