June 7, 2004—The British government has welcomed plans for a new code to create environmentally friendly, sustainable buildings. Contained in a report from the Sustainable Buildings Task Group, the new Code for Sustainable Building (CSB) sets out best practice standards on energy efficiency, flood resilience, water consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, and waste production.
The independent Sustainable Buildings Task Group was tasked with identifying how government and industry could improve the quality and sustainability of new and refurbished buildings. Government departments including the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM), the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), and the Department for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) have agreed to start work immediately on the main principles and possibilities for the CSB.
