December 3, 2003—British Energy Minister Stephen Timms recently reaffirmed the UK Government’s commitment to a carbon-free energy future and to the renewable energy industry with 59million of new funding for six offshore wind farms.
The announcement came as a new survey was published highlighting unprecedented levels of public support for renewable energy. Ninety percent of the British public thinks it is a “good idea,” with two thirds favoring renewable energy sources over fossil fuels.
The six projects awarded funding will have a combined capacity of 531MW, enough to power 350,000 homes. Each wind farm will consist of 30 turbines. Construction is expected to begin in 2004-5.
