UK government to fast-track disabled access

September 27, 2002—The UK Government has published new rules to ensure newly built public and commercial buildings provide ramps, automatic doors, audio enhancement and clearer signage for greater accessibility.

The proposals relate to Part M of the Building Regulations 2000 (Access and Facilities for Disabled People) to bring them into line with a new British Standard code of practice on access for disabled people.

The BS 8300:2001 ‘Design of buildings and their approaches to meet the needs of disabled people—Code of Practice’ provides guidance for the use of the built environment by disabled people.
