UK health and safety administration targets construction sites

May 6, 2002—A campaign to cut the numbers of people killed and injured in the construction industry was launched recently in the UK.

The focus on construction sites follows recent injury statistics—between April 2000 and March 2001, 106 construction workers in the UK were killed on sites and 4,672 were injured, according to workplacelaw.net. The construction industry employs around seven per cent of the workforce but accounts for 30 per cent of all reported accidents.

HSE inspectors will hold monthly construction site blitzes in different parts of the country, in a bid to cut down on the toll of deaths, injuries and ill health on badly run sites. Out of the 291 work-related deaths last year, 106 were on construction sites.
