November 23, 2001—The HSE has published new guidance on how to deal with biological/chemical packages received through the post, so as to minimize employees risk of exposure and possibility of harm.
The overall message is to stay calm, but those opening post are recommended to:
- keep an eye out for suspicious envelopes or packages;
- open all mail with a letter opener or other method that is least likely to disturb contents;
- open packages/envelopes with a minimum amount of movement;
- keep hands away from nose and mouth while opening mail;
- not blow into envelopes ,or shake/pour out contents; and
- wash hands after handling mail.
The guidance also offers advice on what a suspicious package may look like, and what to do if you receive a suspicious package.
Employers are advised to have contingency plans in place. Under health and safety at work legislation, including the Biological Agents Directive, employers must select from a hierarchy of measures when selecting preventative measures to control risks to workers.
