UK hospitality trade accused of blocking passive smoking law

June 21, 2002—The British campaign group Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) has accused the UK hospitality trade of blocking the Approved Code of Practice (ACoP) on workplace smoking. According to ASH, the hospitality trade has pressed for a voluntary approach to regulating smoking in pubs, bars, cafes, and restaurants, which has produced very little change. According to the latest figures from the Public Places Charter group, only nine percent of public places have changed their policies to cater to non- smokers by creating separate smoking/non-smoking areas.
