UK hospitals’ cutbacks undermine cleaning services

Recent statistics show that 30% of UK hospitals fall far short of the desired Quality Control Standards in cleanliness, which an association representing many of the outsourced service providers says is the fault of ongoing cutbacks.

Speaking on behalf of the Business Services Association (BSA), director-general Norman Rose commented: “For too long, the NHS [National Health Service] has concentrated on lowering maintenance costs within hospital wards, regardless of the detrimental effect this may have on standards and quality . . . Hit teams can only provide a short-term and partial answer.”

The new European standard “Cleaning services—basic requirements and recommendations for quality measuring systems” is expected to be published soon. UK best practice guidance is being developed to assist in the implementation of this standard.
