UK local government adopts new procurement strategy

October 26, 2003—Local government, which collectively spends 40bn a year on goods and services, has been given a new route-map intended to deliver real improvements within the next three years.

The National Procurement Strategy for Local Government will, says Minister Phil Hope, help councils to ensure that both value for money and efficiency savings are obtained on a continuing basis. In addition, improvements are to be made to the way authorities manage procurement.

“Procurement has a major impact on all aspects of service delivery and performance outcomes,” Hope commented. “The implementation of this strategy will help us realize our vision of higher quality services throughout the country. It will also help councils achieve their strategic objectives and secure better value for money in procurement decisions.”

An explanation of the strategy is available on the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister Web site.
