UK school to use retinal scanning to identify students

January 15, 2003—A British school due to open in September 2003 plans to use retinal scanning technology to identify students checking out library books or buying meals in the school cafeteria, according to a recent report in BBC News.

The school’s authorities claim that the biometric technology is safe, cost-effective, foolproof, and backed by the pupils. However, the National Union of Teachers has expressed concerns over health and financial aspects of the plan. Reprinted with permission; copyright 2003 i-FM
