UK survey finds efficiency is main reason employees work from home

Sixty-eight percent of the employees responding to a recent UK government survey say they work from home in order to be more efficient. Seven percent work from home to take care of their children or elderly relatives, 7% do it for transportation reasons, and less than 1% for personal health reasons. Only 22% of the companies surveyed allow their employees to work from home, with 18% of that number seeing it as an occasional arrangement. Of the 7,500 respondents to the survey, 24% of the men are allowed to work from home, and 16% of the women. In addition, 38% of the men, compared to 33% of the women, affirm that they would like to work from home. Government ministers hope these results will show employers that it is not only women with young children who look for more flexible working arrangements. They assert that both men and women can benefit from better arrangements to balance work and home life.
