February 4, 2005—UK organizations are failing to manage change effectively and this is causing an increase in stress, harassment and conflict at work, according to Roffey Park’s eighth management agenda report.
The executive education and research organizations annual ‘snapshot’ of the workplace surveys over 600 managers. Nearly all reported experiencing organizational change over the past two years. A third said this focused on downsizing and 40% of multi-national organizations said production was being shifted to cheaper labor markets.
Roffey Park researchers conclude that the majority of organizations are good at initiating change, but bad at consolidating it, maintaining momentum and reviewing and learning from the process.
The survey identifies a series of challenges for organizations, including: managing change, recruiting and retaining key people, focusing on the core business, cutting costs, staying ahead of competitors and complying with increasing regulation and legislation.
The managers questioned listed a host of complaints, but almost half said that organizational changes had resulted in new opportunities. But about the same proportion noted that they are considering changing jobs in the near future.
