April 30, 2003—British Energy Minister Brian Wilson gave the go-ahead in March to BP CHP to increase the capacity of the gas-fired combined heat and power station at the Polimeri Europa works at Hythe, Hampshire, from 48MW to 53MW. Wilson also gave revised clearance for the larger station to be fueled by natural gas.
Wilson commented, “The decision demonstrates the Government’s continuing commitment to promote CHP, wherever practicable, and our commitment to reducing emissions of greenhouse gases, and our aim to put the UK among the top 25% of the most energy efficient economies rather than mid-ranking as we currently are.”
Combined heat and power plants are designed to produce both electricity and usable heat. They have environmental benefits due to their very high levels of efficiency. For more information, visit the British Department of Trade and Industry.
