December 19, 2001—Extendicare Inc., based in Markham, Ontario, has selected UNICCO Facilities Services Canada Company of Toronto to provide housekeeping, laundry and maintenance services for five new long-term care and two new assisted living facilities. This first contract between the two companies covers new Extendicare facilities located in southwestern Ontario.
Through its subsidiaries, Extendicare operates 261 facilities. UNICCO is providing daily cleaning, laundry and maintenance services at the facilities as they become operational. UNICCO also plays a role in preparing the facilities for occupancy by performing pre-cleaning and other maintenance services before the furniture and equipment is installed. As the facilities are staffed, UNICCO is also collaborating with Extendicare staff to develop and present training programs.
UNICCO has established a centralized procurement program for the facilities that saves Extendicare money on cleaning supplies by reducing procurement costs and managing the handling and distribution of supplies. Additionally, UNICCO has several high tech facilities management resources, including inspection systems, Web-based portals and eProcurement, that could be used to benefit the new facilities.
