May 30, 2003—The US Department of Defence has selected Nuvera Fuel Cells to demonstrate its newest product prototype, a 4 KW natural gas fuel cell system called Avanti, at the US Coast Guard facility in Bristol, Rhode Island.
The contract was awarded through the Construction Engineering Research Laboratory (CERL), which is part of the US Army Engineer Research and Development Centre.
The award calls for the installation, operation, maintenance, and monitoring of Avanti systems over a period of one year. The systems, which are slated for delivery later this year, are fully integrated and operate in parallel with the electric grid.
CERL conducts research to support sustainable military operations. Its mission is directed toward increasing the Army’s ability to more efficiently construct, operate, and maintain its installations and ensure environmental quality and safety at a reduced life-cycle cost.
“A key part of this program will involve monitoring the systems during the demonstration period and analyzing the collected data,” said Josh Lutton, Nuvera’s Director of Distributed Generation. “Field demonstrations like this allow us to gain valuable experience in real operating environments, while at the same time highlighting the small size, efficiency, and durability of Nuvera’s products.”
