April 25, 2003—In order to help prevent moisture build-up leading to a costly and difficult mold problem, United States Gypsum Company has developed Sheetrock Brand Humitek Gypsum Panels, which are moisture- and mold-resistant from front to back. The wallboard panels are identifiable by their light blue face paper and the Humitek brand name printed on the end tapes.
U.S. Gypsum, a subsidiary of USG Corporation, says that this innovative product, like their other wallboard products, offers “outstanding performance” in the areas of fire resistance, sound control, abuse resistance, and aesthetics. According to the company, Humitek is the first moisture- and mold-resistant panel that is installed and finished in a traditional manner without the need for skim coating or other steps that require extra labor.
The new Humitek product line is designed specifically for use in interior areas. It is available initially in a 5/8-inch thickness and in 8-, 10-, and 12-foot lengths (a -inch-thick panel will be available shortly). The panels feature tapered edges for easy finishing. They score and snap quickly, and require no special handling or installation procedures. In addition, they are UL classified for fire resistance (Type X), surface burning characteristics, and non-combustibility.
While the use of moisture-resistant gypsum panels can help minimize the chances for mold to grow, U.S. Gypsum emphasizes that they are just one part of a comprehensive approach to controlling this serious problem. The most effective and economical strategy, the company says, is to protect building materials and equipment from exposure to moisture during storage, construction, and after completion of the building envelope. This can only be accomplished by combining sound design, installation, maintenance, and inspection practices.
Research has shown that the majority of moisture problems still originate with water leaks—wet equipment or components, poor roofing or exterior flashing details, plumbing or HVAC system leaks, or poor site drainage or flooding, says US Gypsum. To date, no realistic testing protocol has been developed to predict the susceptibility of common building materials to mold growth. U.S. Gypsum is working with a variety of organizations to address this situation.
The company has also created a special section on the USG Web site devoted specifically to the subject of moisture and mold. The online support center provides a comprehensive library of information and resources, as well as information about Sheetrock Brand Humitek Gypsum Panels.
