US legislators to address hazards of mold in buildings

June 5, 2002—When the U.S. House of Representatives returns from the Memorial Day recess, Rep. John Conyers (D-MI) is expected to introduce a bill to address mold in residential and commercial buildings, reports the Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA).

The bill may call on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to issue guidelines that establish acceptable levels of mold; set standards for inspections and remediation; and license labs that would test toxicity levels of mold.

Language authorizing the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to study the health effects of mold may also be included; however, the bill would most likely call for EPA guidelines before the results of the research are known.
