April 26, 2002—The United States Postal Service recently dedicated the nation’s largest federal roof-integrated solar photovoltaic installation at its Marina Mail Processing and Distribution Center in Marina del Rey, Calif.
The 50×300-foot, 127-kilowatt system was built and installed by PowerLight Corporation using solar panels produced at Siemens & Shell Solar manufacturing facility. It is capable of generating enough electricity to power 120 homes and is virtually maintenance free.
The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) helped facilitate the installation through its Green LA Program.
