USCM announces “most livable” cities, best climate protection

June 30, 2008—The US Conference of Mayors (USCM) recently announced awards for the mayors of the “most livable” cities and those who have implemented the best climate protection programs.

Mayors Jerry E. Abramson of Louisville (KY) and Roy D. Buol of Dubuque (IA) were awarded first place honors in the prestigious 2008 City Livability Awards Program. The winning cities were selected for their healthy hometown program and river revitalization project, respectively. In its 29th year, program recognizes mayoral leadership for developing and implementing programs that improve the quality of life in America’s cities. It is sponsored by USCM and Waste Management.

Outstanding Achievement Awards were named for cities with populations of 100,000 or more: Chicago (IL); Honolulu (HI); Seattle (WA); and Tampa (FL). Outstanding Achievement Awards for cities with populations of fewer than 100,000 people went to: Wilmington (DE); Cerritos (CA); Goodyear (AZ); and Frisco (TX).

Honorable Mention Citations were awarded to cities with populations of 100,000 or more: Columbus (OH); Forth Collins (CO); Las Vegas (NV); Orlando (FL); and Stamford (CT). Cities with populations of less than 100,000 that received Honorable Mentions were Aguadilla (PR); Albany (NY); Avondale (AZ); Coral Gables (FL); and Sugar Land (TX).

Mayors Greg Nickels of Seattle (WA), and James Brainard of Carmel (IN) were awarded first place honors in the 2008 Mayors’ Climate Protection Awards Program. The second annual awards, sponsored by The US Conference of Mayors and Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., recognize and honor mayors for their outstanding and innovative practices to increase energy efficiency in their cities and to help curb global warming.

Outstanding Achievement Awards were received by:

  • Large cities: Denver (CO) Mayor John W. Hickenlooper; Honolulu (HI) Mayor Mufi Hanneman; Houston (TX) Mayor Bill White; and New York (NY) Mayor Michael Bloomberg
  • Small cities: Chapel Hill (NC) Mayor Kevin C. Foy; Columbia (MO) Mayor Darwin Hindman; Highland Park (IL) Mayor Michael Belsky; and Orland Park (IL) Mayor Daniel J. McLaughlin

Honorable Mention citations were also awarded to the following cities: Bartlett (IL) Mayor Catherine J. Melchert; Chattanooga, (TN) Mayor Ron Littlefield; Colorado Springs, (CO) Mayor Lionel Rivera; Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums; Phoenix; Mayor Phil Gordon; Pleasanton (CA) Mayor Jennifer Hosterman; San Francisco Mayor; Gavin Newsom; and Scranton (PA) Mayor Christopher A. Doherty
