July 11, 2005—The US Green Building Council (USGBC) has announced that more than 20,000 building industry professionals have earned Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Professional Accreditation.
LEED Accredited Professionals (LEED APs) support and encourage integrated design and help project teams streamline the LEED Green Building Rating SystemT application and certification process. The LEED AP program was designed to recognize individuals who have demonstrated the skills and expertise necessary to participate in the green building design process.
The LEED Green Building Rating System was developed by the USGBC in 2000 as a green building design tool and guideline. In the past five years, more than 2000 projects have registered with USGBC, declaring their intent to seek LEED certification of their building. In the past seven months alone, USGBC has launched two new LEED rating systems: LEED for Commercial Interiors (LEED-CI) and LEED for Existing Buildings (LEED-EB). LEED-CI addresses the specific needs of tenant improvement projects, and LEED-EB deals with sustainable building operation and maintenance.
