August 7, 2002—Ultraviolet Devices, Inc.’s (UVDI) new AirSword XS and XT product line is specifically designed to improve indoor air quality (IAQ) within classrooms, particularly mobile classrooms, in response to growing concern by parents, teachers, administrators, and government agencies.
According to the Government Accounting Office report, 20% of the US’s 80,000 public schools have indoor air quality problems. In California’s 20 largest school districts (out of over 1000 California school districts), almost a half million students attend class in over 19,000 portable classrooms.
The AirSword product line utilizes germicidal ultraviolet light (UVC) to irradiate the cooling coil surfaces within heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. Cooling coils are frequently wet and dusty and thus can provide a nutrient source for microorganisms. The HVAC system becomes a breeding ground for multiple microorganisms including mold and pathogens in a moving air stream. UVC damages the DNA of microorganisms, rendering them non-infectious and drastically reducing or prohibiting their growth.
The AirSword(R) product line comes in six models: the AirSword XS 33″, 28″, and 15″ models designed for use with wall-mounted HVAC systems typically found on portable classrooms; and the AirSword XT 33″, 28″, and 15″ designed for roof-top HVAC systems typically found on school campuses requiring a “top-down” orientation.
