April 1, 2005—Intelligent Perimeter Systems (IPS has released its Model 400, which can be deployed in arrays to protect against intrusion by the largest motor vehicles on the road today.
The Model 400 system consists of retractable steel posts (called bollards) that are installed underground in arrays of three or more, with the top of each post flush with the roadway. At the push of a button, the swipe of an access card, or a signal from a radio controller or satellite, the 1,400-pound bollards quickly deploy, reaching their maximum height of 36 inches in 6 seconds or less.
One set of three barriers is designed to stop a 30,000-pound vehicle traveling at 50 mph—double the stopping power required by Department of State K12 anti-terrorist certification, according to the company. When arranged in rows, the barriers can provide protection against larger vehicles, the company says.
