Virginia offers incentives for companies to expand teleworking opportunities

Virginia Governor Jim Gilmore recently announced telework!va—a public/private partnership that provides up to $35,000 over two years for businesses in northern Virginia to start or expand a formal teleworking program.

Administered through the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT) by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (MWCOG), the telework!va program is limited to reimbursement of lease costs and consultant/technical assistance expenses. It reimburses a variable percentage of the lease expense for equipment, teleworking center space, and technical assistance for setting up programs and installing equipment. No purchases are eligible for reimbursement.

Business applications to participate in the telework!va pilot program are now being accepted for review by DRPT and MWCOG. Applicants must demonstrate their willingness to start a long-term program, invest in the planning and staff resources required to sustain a program, and commit to an implementation schedule with appropriate milestones of two years or less. Priority will be given to new program starts, although existing program expansion requests may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
