Wal-Mart, Kohl’s, Target to go solar

June 6, 2007—Three major retail companies—Wal-Mart, Kohl’s, and Target—have recently announced plans to begin using solar power in their retail and distribution facilities.

Wal-Mart Stores announced a major purchase of solar power from three solar power providers, BP Solar, SunEdison LLC, and PowerLight (a subsidiary of SunPower Corporation), for 22 combined Wal-Mart stores, Sam’s Clubs, and a distribution center in Hawaii and California. Wal-Mart says that the pilot project is a major step toward the company’s goal of being supplied by 100 percent renewable energy.

Kohl’s Corporation announced its plans to convert more than 75 percent of its California locations to solar power, with initial construction beginning in May. In total, 24 of Kohl’s 80 California locations will mark the company’s immediate entry into solar energy. Within the state, Kohl’s also is pursuing permits and approvals for an additional 40 or more locations.

Target Corporation has installed solar panels on three stores in Los Angeles and another in El Cajon, California. The company plans to install up to 14 more solar projects across the state in 2007.
