May 20, 2005—Washington Group International, Inc. has announced that SGT LLC, a company joint venture with Framatome ANP, has been awarded a contract to provide services for replacing steam generators at the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant in California.
The contract was awarded by Pacific Gas and Electric Company of San Francisco, operator of the plant, says Washington Group. SGT will provide project management, planning, engineering, and construction services to prepare and install four new steam generators at each of the two units at Diablo Canyon. Installation of the replacement steam generators is scheduled during refueling outages at Unit 2 in early 2008 and at Unit 1 in 2009.
The Diablo Canyon plant, located in San Luis Obispo County, provides electricity for more than two million people in northern and central California. Each of its two units produces 1,100 megawatts of electrical power. Steam generators are used in pressurized water reactor nuclear plants to transfer heat from water heated under pressure inside the reactor to a second, closed-water system that turns the heat to steam that drives the turbine- generator to produce electricity.
Framatome ANP is a subsidiary of AREVA, which offers its clients technological solutions for nuclear energy and transmission and distribution.
