February 14, 2005—The UK’s first large scale wave and tidal power generation farms could be contributing to the national grid within three years under a new support plan worth 42million recently announced by Energy Minister Mike O’Brien. Funded from the 50 million Marine Research Deployment Fund, the project will support the UK’s world-leading wave and tidal industry to construct demonstration farms around the UK, according to officials.
The British Governments support of new and renewable energy technologies will help meet its target of 10 percent of electricity supply from renewables by 2010 and an aspiration to double that to 20 percent by 2020. For details of the new plan, visit DTI/Renewables.
