August 8, 2005—Weather Shield Mfg. is using 50 licenses of SolidWorks 3D mechanical design software to design, configure, and customize doors and windows for architects, builders, and major retailers around the world, according to the manufacturer in the window and door industry. It is using COSMOS design validation software to test the designs prior to prototyping, further speeding products to market, says Weather Shield.
Many Weather Shield custom orders require engineers to vertically combine (“stack”) windows or to mix (“mull”) windows and doors for specific business or home requirements. The process often requires wholesale reconfiguration of height, length, width, depth, angle, and grille patterns.
Weather Shield has standardized on SolidWorks all of its new design work and is converting 2D components designed with AutoCAD software into 3D designs. With SolidWorks, the company expects to significantly accelerate its design work through increased automation.
