WGES wins contract to provide wind-generated power to MD government agencies

May 17, 2004—Washington Gas Energy Services, Inc. (WGES) has been awarded a two-year contract to provide wind-generated power to a consortium of Maryland government entities, led by the Montgomery County government. The purchase of more than 38 million kilowatt hours per year, represents 5 percent of the participants’ total electricity needs. It is the largest purchase of wind power by local jurisdictions in the country and the largest commitment to wind energy in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area.

The Montgomery County government negotiated the agreement on behalf of Montgomery County government agencies, as well as the Prince George’s County Government, the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission, Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission, Chevy Chase Village, Section 5 of the Village of Chevy Chase, the City of Gaithersburg, the City of Rockville, the Rockville Housing Authority, the City of Takoma Park, the Town of Glen Echo, the Town of Kensington, the Town of Laytonsville, the Town of Somerset, and the City of College Park.

Wind power will be provided by the Mountaineer Wind Energy Center in Thomas, W.Va., through arrangements with Community Energy, Inc. (CEI) of Wayne, Pa. Community Energy, founded in 1999 with the support of environmental leaders and energy suppliers to bring wind energy to market, is a leader in expanding the market for wind-generated power.
