August 17, 2026 — Employers added 30,000 jobs in July. That’s a far cry from the estimate that 78,000 positions would be filled. And June’s growth was revised down from a gain of 49,000 to 30,000, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Jobs Report released August 7, 2026. The financial sector lost 14,000 jobs in July with the downslide attributed to credit intermediaries, (-8,800), and insurance carriers reduced by 6,700. May 2025 was the finance sector’s last high mark with 121,000 positions reported.
Healthcare, which has been the leading sector for job creation, rose by 22,000, which was below its 12-month average of 36,000. Construction also saw an increase of 22,000. Government employment is getting harder to predict, with a contraction of 53,000 jobs in July. The purported increase of 8,000 jobs in June was further revised to an actual loss of 10,000 jobs.
In July, the number of people jobless less than 5 weeks edged down to 2.0 million and is down by 344,000 over the year. The number of long-term unemployed (those jobless for 27 weeks or more) edged down over the month to 1.8 million but changed little over the year. The long-term unemployed accounted for 25.5 percent of all unemployed people in July.
