August 2, 2002—The Wiremold Company has introduced new technology that enables Walker poke-thru devices to exceed forthcoming UL standards for scrubwater exclusion in carpet applications.
Beginning in June, 2003, new standards under UL514A will require that the power compartments of poke-thru devices meet the carpet test. The Wiremold Company has redesigned its poke-thru devices to not only meet this requirement, but to also meet the current and more stringent tile floor requirement. Thus, for the first time, poke-thru devices may be installed in tile surfaces.
New Top Guard protection uses gaskets in conjunction with integral slide covers to prevent water from entering the electrical compartment, as required by UL514A. Although not required by the standard, this protection has been extended to communications as well.
Water entry into communications connectors is not considered a high risk for fire and/or shock, but the presence of moisture can damage connectors. A more practical advantage, however, is that gaskets that are designed to deter water also keep out dust and debris that can degrade the performance of sensitive communications systems.
Walker poke-thru systems that now feature Top Guard protection include:
- RC3 Series poke-thru: 20 amp duplex power and four UTP communications ports.
- RC7 Series poke-thru: Two communication connectors and 20A duplex power receptacle.
Pedestal style poke-thru devices, including the RC92GHB multi-service, FIT, and RC9FF Series were standards-compliant as of September, 2001. For more information, contact Wiremold.
