Workplace Safety Figures Improve in UK

UK’s Health and Safety Commission’s (HSC) latest workplace safety statistics show a downward trend in both numbers and the incidence rate of injuries to workers in the year to March 31, 2000. The HSC statistics show that in 1999-00 the fatal injury fell from 0.9 to 0.8 per hundred thousand workers. Deaths dropped from 253 to 218, and major injuries in 1998-99 dropped from 29,053 to 28,939. However, there was an increase of 14 deaths in the construction industry, which accounts for one-third of workplace deaths.

European Teleworkers to Reach 10 million this Year
A steady and rapid growth in the number of teleworkers in Europe will soar to 10 million this year, and by 2005, more than 10 percent of the European workforce will join the teleworking ranks. Finland leads with most teleworkers, followed by Germany, with Spain third. These are among initial findings of a new report “Telework in Europe—Status and Potential.”
