May 7, 2003—Workplace violence continues to be a leading concern for American businesses, according to Pinkerton Consulting & Investigations’ tenth annual survey of Fortune 1000 corporate security professionals.
“The survey was conducted during a period of heightened security awareness and increasing threats of terrorism and violence. It is not surprising that workplace violence, business interruption, internet security and terrorism are the leading threats,” commented Don Walker, CPP, Pinkerton’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. “World events and economic conditions have had a dramatic influence on their security concerns.”
The study, “Top Security Threats and Management Issues Facing Corporate America,” was made possible by the participation of Fortune 1000 security professionals and their responses to a detailed questionnaire. The following top 10 security threats were identified in rank order:
- Workplace Violence
- Business Interruption/Continuity Planning
- Internet/Intranet Security
- Terrorism (Global and Domestic)
- Employee Selection/Screening Concerns
- Fraud/White-Collar Crime
- General Employee Theft
- Unethical Business Conduct
- Drugs/Alcohol in the Workplace
- Identity Theft
Workplace Violence has held first place for the last five years and has ranked first or near the top of the list in each of Pinkerton’s previous surveys. The total costs associated with workplace violence are estimated at $36 billion annually and effects over two million Americans every year.
