The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and International Building Code (ICC) cannot come to agreement on the establishment of one building code following failure of negotiation efforts. As a result, NFPA has established a Technical Coordinating Committee (TCC) for its new NFPA Building Code TM (http://buildingcode.nfpa.org). Through an effort called GIT (Get It Together) a number of coalition partners, including American Institute of Architects, have been urging NFPA and ICC to coordinate their efforts. The establishment of ICC has been supported through agreements that NFPA entered into last year with International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials and Western Fire Chiefs. A draft of the NFPA code calls for release early this summer after a review by the TCC. NFPA should have a nearly complete set of codes by 2003 based on the NFPA-ANSI consensus process. NFPA building code information is available from David Collins, FAIA, at 513/621-2109, or pregrp@aol.com.
