Attendees include: commissioning providers, building owners and facilities managers, energy managers, MEP engineers, HVAC testing professionals, and other building professionals. Presenter: Greg Swafford, CPD, GPD, GF Piping Systems. Cost: Free. Time: 2:00 p.m. Eastern. Continuing Education Credits: AIA 1 LU.

Learning Objectives:

  • List common building water issues impacting water safety and efficiency.
  • Explain key water management principles for minimizing risk associated with premise plumbing.
  • Identify emerging technology available to support effective building water management.
  • Describe how emerging technology supports key water management objectives: user satisfaction, water and energy optimization, and drinking water hygiene.

May 12 Virtual Best Practices for Anti-Terrorism Security (BPATS) Based Assessment Process for Commercial Facilities Course [VIRTUAL] National Institute of Building Sciences (NIBS)

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has national leadership responsibilities for managing risks involving critical infrastructure, key resources, and events. DHS has identified commercial facilities as key assets in the critical infrastructure/ key resource sector and encourages the widespread deployment of effective anti-terrorism technologies, services and capabilities. Building security programs are a technology that may receive designation under the SAFETY Act. To help commercial building owners and managers, the Science and Technology Directorate and the Office of SAFETY Act Implementation identified a set of best operational security practices for metropolitan commercial office buildings, referred to as Best Practices for Anti-Terrorism Security or BPATS.

On May 12, 2021, NIBS will be conducting a virtual training session on BPATS Based Assessment Process for Commercial Facilities from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. EST. The training will start with an overview of the DHS SAFETY Act and an introduction to the BPATS Assessment Process and Common Security Practices. Then the instructor will describe the online BPATS Assessment Tool in detail, provide training on how to use the tool, and lead a hands-on exercise with the students.

May 12 Various locations worldwide World FM Day/Week 2021 [VIRTUAL] Global FM; IFMA; FM organizations worldwide

Initiated in 2008 by Global FM and given renewed exposure by the current global pandemic, World FM Day aims to recognize the vital work that FM professionals contribute to business worldwide, and to raise the profile of the FM profession anywhere they influence the health, safety, productivity and well-being of people who utilize the built environment. With the pandemic, FM teams have stood at the forefront in making environments and digital platforms available to meet unanticipated demands and have been significantly important in keeping many sectors operating. With a renewed importance being placed on human health and safety coupled with building sustainability and resilience, the FM today has been thrust into the center of the “Return To” conversation.

Titled “Celebrating FM — Standing Tall Beyond the Pandemic,” this year’s World FM Day activities are encouraged the week of May 10-14. FM organizations on six continents normally celebrate World FM Day by holding public events such as staff luncheons, panel seminars and workshops, social media chats, client networking events and more. Winners of the 2021 World FM Awards will be announced. Global FM offers the World FM Day 2021 Toolkit in numerous languages on its site.

IFMA marks the occasion in various ways and encourages activities the whole month. Let IFMA or Global FM know how you plan to celebrate World FM Day, and they will help spread the word via social media channels.

May 26 Virtual Surface Cleaning, Air Cleaning, and Indoor Air Quality: Expect the Unexpected (#2 in series) [CIRI WEBINAR] Cleaning Industry Research Institute (CIRI)

This is Webinar #2 of the three-part series Aerosols, Fomites and Air Quality: What research says about the impact of cleaning on health.

Webinar #2 will be presented by Douglas B. Collins, Ph.D. Assistant Professor of Chemistry, Bucknell University, May 26 at 1:00 p.m. EDT.

Indoor air quality (IAQ) is associated with a range of health outcomes for building occupants. The composition of indoor air is governed by the building’s environmental surroundings, structural and material features of the building, air handling, and the activities that take place within. From a chemical perspective, the composition of air in a building can change rapidly in response to a change in any one of the aforementioned factors. In this presentation, Prof. Collins will focus on how surface- and air-cleaning methods can bring about unintended consequences for indoor air. Since nearly every action we take in a building can have a downstream effect on the indoor environment, it is important to consider both the direct and indirect effects of our actions on indoor air. Despite our best intentions to maintain healthy indoor environments, we need to expect that we will come to find perhaps unexpected air quality outcomes resulting from our actions.
